Laguiole Steak Knife and Fork Set, 1 Place Setting
Laguiole en Aubrac makes each steak knife and fork, set for 1, by hand in France: one knife and one fork with matching handles, for a single place setting. It’s a single knife and fork set, ideal if you often eat alone or simply like having a favourite pair. You can also give everyone at home their own handle, so there’s never any doubt whose is whose.
This 1 person cutlery set comes with handles in wood, horn and other natural materials, each with a satin or gloss finish to suit it. For two people, see the Laguiole Steak Knife and Fork Set, 2 Place Settings. If you only need knives, there’s the Laguiole Steak Knives, Set of 2. For forks on their own, the Laguiole Table Forks, Set of 6 come in all of these handles.

Olive wood, juniper or buffalo horn
Olive is a Mediterranean wood, light and warm in tone, with a satin finish. Juniper, a hardy wood from the Mediterranean mountains, is satin-finished too, and its pale blond to honey colouring is broken up by small knots. Buffalo horn has been used on Laguiole knives since the 19th century, and here it's polished to a glossy black. Whichever of the three you pick, it goes on both handles, so the pair always matches. The fork's handle also follows the same design as the knife's.

A place setting for one, or one each
Plenty of households lay the same one or two places at the table every single day. A single set means you own exactly what you use, in a handle you chose. Or buy several, each in a different handle, and everybody at home gets cutlery they'll recognise as theirs. Nothing stops other firms using the Laguiole name, and lots of mass-produced cutlery does. On this pair, made by hand in France, the blade bears its maker's name, Laguiole en Aubrac.
Adding to the table later
All of the handles here are also sold as a set for two, as steak knives in twos, fours and sixes, and as table forks in sixes. Start with one place setting, live with the handle for a while, then buy more in that wood or horn when the table grows. As each handle comes from a natural material, the colour and grain will vary slightly between pieces bought at different times.
Questions about knives and forks
How do you wrap a knife and fork inside a napkin?
Fold a cloth napkin into a rectangle, lay the cutlery on it slightly off-centre, then fold the bottom edge up over the handles. Fold one side over, roll the bundle towards the other side and tie it with string or slip it into a napkin ring. With matching handles, this Laguiole en Aubrac pair makes a tidy bundle on each plate.
Who invented the knife and fork?
No one person. Knives have been used to eat since ancient times, while the table fork spread from the Byzantine world to Italy in the Middle Ages and reached England in the early 1600s, brought back by travellers. Laguiole en Aubrac makes this pairing by hand in France, with matching handles on knife and fork.
How should cutlery be set on a table?
Lay the fork to the plate's left and the knife to its right, blade turned in, with cutlery for the starter on the outside. A pudding spoon and fork can sit above the plate. For a steak, one knife and one fork are all you need, and in this set both share the same handle.
Care instructions arrive with each order. Wash both pieces by hand, pat them dry straight after, and keep any wood or horn handle well clear of a dishwasher.
