Laguiole Steak Knives, Set of 6
Made by hand in France by Laguiole en Aubrac, these Laguiole steak knives are bought six at a time, one for each place at the table. Everyone gets a proper steak knife, whether it’s sirloin, a pork chop or the Sunday roast. Choose the same handle material on all six, or a mixed set in which each knife has its own wood or horn.
With one Laguiole steak knives set you can lay six places, and the Laguiole Table Forks, Set of 6 come in the same handles. If you’d like knives and forks together, the 12-Piece Laguiole Cutlery Set for 6 pairs six of each. For fewer places, choose the Laguiole Steak Knives, Set of 4 or the Laguiole Steak Knives, Set of 2. For French steak knives with a natural feel, the wooden steak knives here come in many woods, and the Guide to 6-Piece Laguiole Steak Knife Sets goes through them in detail.

Olive wood, snakewood and horn tip handles
On Laguiole olive wood steak knives, the satin-finished handle has honey tones veined with brown, and it slowly darkens over time. Snakewood, polished, runs from brown to a rich red and is patterned like the skin of a snake. Zebu horn tip, also polished, has pale blond and amber flames over darker horn, and a few handles are translucent in places. Olive wood is also offered with hand-chiselled double plates, the most elaborate version Laguiole en Aubrac makes. Among wooden handle steak knives, olive wood gives a lighter, honeyed look, and snakewood a darker, polished one.

Luxury steak knives: what sets them apart
With luxury steak knives, what matters is how they are made and what they are made of. Laguiole en Aubrac makes these by hand in France, and every blade bears the Laguiole en Aubrac name. Being natural, wood and horn vary in grain and flame from knife to knife. Sets come in a single material or in mixed woods or mixed horns, with satin or polished finishes. That range means you can pick a set to suit your plates and table rather than settle for one design.
A set of six, or a smaller set?
Six is the obvious choice if you regularly cook for friends or family. It covers six places, matches the table forks sold in sixes, and leaves no one with an odd knife. A set of four suits a smaller household, while a pair works for two or for adding to older cutlery. Many handles, including olive wood and snakewood, come in all three sizes, so a pair bought later will match your six.
Steak knife questions
Why are Laguiole steak knives so expensive?
These sets are handmade in France by Laguiole en Aubrac, many with handles in natural materials such as olive wood, snakewood or horn, and handwork costs more than factory production. Laguiole isn't a protected name, so it appears on lots of factory-made cutlery. On these knives, every blade reads Laguiole en Aubrac.
What is a steak knife?
It's a table knife made for cutting meat on the plate, laid at each place for steak, chops or a roast. A thick sirloin is hard work with a standard table knife, and a steak knife is made for exactly that job. Here they're sold in sixes, in one handle material or mixed, and sets of four and two are sold too.
Are wooden knives good?
Yes. For steak knives, a wooden handle is warm in the hand and each one has a grain of its own. Olive wood, with its satin finish, deepens in colour, while snakewood is polished and runs to a darker red. Wooden handles need only a little care: hand wash them, then dry straight after, to keep the finish.
Every order includes care instructions. After the meal, wash the knives up by hand and dry each one with a tea towel, as a dishwasher's heat and long soak take the shine off wood and horn.
