Laguiole Corkscrews
Each Laguiole corkscrew in this collection, made by hand in France by Laguiole en Aubrac, has a foil cutter, lever and worm that fold into a single handle. In the UK this style is usually called a waiter’s friend, the compact sort that bar staff and sommeliers slip into a pocket. The foil cutter on this Laguiole wine opener also takes the crown cap off a bottle of beer or a soft drink.
Choosing one is largely about the handle, since the tools work identically on every model. Plain wood or horn makes a wine bottle opener for everyday use, and marquetry handles add colour and pattern, including an inlaid bunch of grapes. For a folding knife that has a corkscrew too, see Pocket Knife with Corkscrew.

Zebu horn tip, juniper or snakewood
Juniper, from Mediterranean mountains, is the pale option: honey to blond, with brown veins and small knots, and a light peppery scent you may notice when you hold it. Snakewood owes its name to dark markings that resemble a snake's skin over brown to deep red wood, and it's polished to a shine. Zebu horn tip, the horn's solid point, is polished, and blond or amber tones run through its darker brown. For a wooden corkscrew, choose juniper for a pale handle or snakewood for a darker one, and anyone who prefers horn can opt for the zebu horn tip. Waiter's friend, wine key or corkscrew?
Corkscrew is the broad word for anything with a worm that draws a cork, from winged models to the T-handle kind. A waiter's friend is one particular sort: it folds flat, with a foil cutter, the worm and a lever you rest on the bottle's rim. Americans tend to call the same tool a wine key, and in restaurants it's also known as a sommelier corkscrew, so all three names describe one design. Whatever you call it, every model on this page is that folding type, made by hand in France by Laguiole en Aubrac.
Plain or marquetry handles?
A handle in a single material puts the focus on its colour and grain, and it's the easy choice for a corkscrew you'll reach for most evenings. Marquetry handles combine several materials into a pattern, such as a chequerboard or a bunch of grapes, and they look the part on a sideboard or a home bar. Laguiole en Aubrac also makes marquetry in other patterns, so you can find a Laguiole corkscrew that suits a traditional table as well as a more colourful one.
Waiter's friend questions
What is a waiter's friend used for?
Opening a bottle of wine from start to finish: cutting the foil, then drawing the cork with the worm and lever, all with one folding tool. On a Laguiole en Aubrac model the foil cutter doubles as a Laguiole bottle opener, so it'll deal with beer too. It's small enough to keep in a pocket or a kitchen drawer.
How do I use a corkscrew?
With a waiter's friend, unfold the foil cutter, score round the neck just below the lip and remove the top of the foil. Fold it back, open the worm, push its point into the centre of the cork and twist until a single turn remains above it. Then set the lever against the bottle's lip and raise the handle to lift the cork free. Instructions come with each Laguiole en Aubrac corkscrew.
Who makes the best waiter's friend?
Plenty of firms make them, and a good number of factory models carry the Laguiole name, since the name carries no legal protection. Laguiole en Aubrac makes every one of its corkscrews by hand in France. Yours can have a zebu horn tip, juniper or snakewood handle, or one of the marquetry designs if you like more pattern.
Every corkscrew arrives with a guide to looking after it. Wash yours by hand, dry it thoroughly, and spare wood or horn handles the dishwasher.
