28-Piece Laguiole Canteen of Cutlery for 6
This Laguiole canteen of cutlery is made by hand in France by Laguiole en Aubrac. Inside are 28 pieces: six place settings of knife, table fork, soup spoon and dessert spoon, plus a carving set and a cheese set. Each piece has its own fitted place in a black, fabric-lined case, which is why the set is called a canteen.
Choosing a cutlery canteen is mostly a question of which handle you like, with twelve versions on offer. You can have ebony, olive wood or zebu horn tip on every piece, for instance, or a mixed set, either six French woods or assorted horns, with a different material at each place. Whichever of these canteens of cutlery you choose, the maker’s name is marked on the knife blades, and each canteen cutlery set comes with a numbered certificate.

Cutlery canteen handles: ebony, olive wood or zebu horn tip
Polished ebony is a deep black that stands out beside white china. Olive wood, with its satin finish, is warm honey in colour with brown veining. Zebu horn tip comes polished, its darker horn streaked with flames of blond or amber, and in places you can see light through it. In a single-material canteen, all 28 handles match, carving and cheese pieces included. In a mixed canteen, every guest gets their own material, the same on all four of their pieces, so nobody picks up a neighbour's spoon by mistake.

28-piece canteen cutlery set: carving and cheese pieces included
Compared with a 24-piece set, this canteen adds four serving pieces. The carving pair comes out for the Sunday roast, whether that's a joint of beef or a roast chicken, and the cheese pair for the cheeseboard afterwards. Each set is a knife and fork, one for carving and one for cheese, and both have matching handles. For more detail on each piece and how the canteen is laid out, read the Guide to 28-Piece Laguiole Cutlery Canteens.
Canteen of cutlery box: the fitted case
The box is black outside and lined with fabric inside, with a fitted place for every one of the 28 pieces, so knives, forks and spoons never rub against one another. Between meals the whole set stays together in the canteen, away from dust and knocks, ready to come out of the sideboard when guests arrive. After dinner, once everything is washed and dried, you put each piece back in its own place and close the case. Nothing goes astray from one family meal to the next.
Canteen of cutlery questions
Why is it called a canteen of cutlery?
Canteen once meant a box holding an army officer's provisions and tableware, and in Britain the word stayed with the fitted case that keeps a full set of cutlery together. This one follows the same idea: six place settings, a carving set and a cheese set, each piece in its own slot, all made by hand in France by Laguiole en Aubrac.
What is the best quality cutlery set?
Judge it on three things: how it is made, what goes into the handles and what the set covers. Every piece here is made by hand in France by Laguiole en Aubrac. The handles are natural wood or horn, so each one has its own grain or markings, and the canteen holds everything needed to serve six, from the soup spoons to the cheese knife.
How do I clean cutlery?
With wooden or horn handles, always by hand. Use warm water with a little washing-up liquid, rinse, and dry each piece straight after with a clean tea towel, handle included, before it goes back in the canteen. Never leave pieces to soak or run them through the dishwasher: heat and detergent spoil natural handles.
Every canteen includes a care leaflet. Wash by hand, dry at once, and save the dishwasher for your everyday knives and forks.
