Brass-Bolster Laguiole Pocket Knives
Brass-bolster Laguiole pocket knives, each handmade in France by Laguiole en Aubrac, carry golden brass at the two ends of the handle. It’s the warm gleam you know from a polished door knocker or the horse brasses on an old pub beam, set against wood. As well as looking good, that brass protects the handle’s ends.
A brass pocket knife like this has a mellower, more classic look than the usual silver-toned Laguiole. It suits the reddish tones of red heart wood, the twisting grain of grapevine and the honey shades of pistachio. Some models are single-bladed and others add a corkscrew. If you’d like a brass knife that still feels every bit a Laguiole, slim and gently curved, start here.

Red heart, grapevine or pistachio wood
Red heart wood has a warm, reddish colour that sits beautifully beside brass. Grapevine wood is cut from vine stock, so its grain twists and knots like the gnarled vine it came from. Pistachio wood mixes honey tones with darker streaks. Each makes a small piece of craftwork you'll happily leave on display on the desk or by the fruit bowl. Because natural wood never repeats, your handle will carry its own grain, slightly different from the photograph.

Why brass bolsters?
Bolsters are the metal caps finishing each end of a Laguiole handle. Made in brass, they give the knife a warmer, more traditional look than silver-toned bolsters, while protecting the handle where it takes the most wear. Against a dark or reddish handle, that golden tone really stands out. Like any brass, the bolsters can slowly darken over time. If you're torn between brass and silver-toned bolsters, think about your home: brass looks right beside an oak dresser or a leather armchair. For a fuller comparison, read How to Choose a Brass Bolster Laguiole Pocket Knife.
A brass folding knife for home and garden
Use a brass folding knife for opening parcels, cutting twine in the greenhouse or slicing a pear at the garden table. Opt for a corkscrew version if there's often a bottle of red at Sunday lunch, and open it with the knife already in your hand. Single-blade and corkscrew models have the same golden brass bolsters. Whichever you choose, it's made by hand in France by Laguiole en Aubrac, whose name the blade carries.
Brass bolster questions
What is brass made of?
Brass is a mix of copper and zinc. Changing the proportions changes its colour, from a reddish tone with more copper to a paler, brighter yellow with more zinc. It's been used for centuries in door furniture, clocks and musical instruments, valued for its golden colour and toughness. On these Laguiole knives, it forms the golden bolsters that finish off the handle.
What colour is brass?
Brass is a warm, golden yellow, which is why it's so often mistaken for gold at first glance. Its exact shade depends on how much copper and zinc it contains, and it can darken gradually as it ages. On these Laguiole en Aubrac pocket knives, the brass bolsters give a golden finish that pairs especially well with reddish and honey-toned woods.
What is a knife bolster?
It's the metal collar between handle and blade, and on a Laguiole a second bolster closes the far end. Bolsters protect the handle and lend the knife a neat, finished appearance. In this collection, both bolsters are brass rather than silver-toned metal, so each handle sits between two gold-coloured ends.
Care is simple, and the instructions in your order explain it: hand-wash the knife, dry it straight after and keep dishwashers well out of the picture.
