Specifications

Selected from mature ram horn, this handle combines natural resilience with timeless character. Each piece displays a unique interplay of tones, ranging from pale ivory to warm caramel and deep brown. Polished to a gentle lustre, the surface retains subtle organic markings that speak to the authenticity of the material.

Forged by Balbach, the Damascus blade features layers of stainless steel folded into flowing, mineral-like patterns. These motifs are not superficial decoration but the result of traditional forge-welding that ensures both strength and individuality. Polished stainless steel bolsters and the emblematic forged bee highlight the knife’s heritage.

Hand-guilloché double plates and intricate filework along the back spring contribute to both structure and elegance. Entirely handcrafted in Laguiole en Aubrac by a cutler, this piece is a refined celebration of authenticity and skilled artistry.

Ram Horn

Ram horn is sourced from mature animals, cut from the most solid sections where the material is strongest and most stable. Naturally smooth and dense, it displays organic patterns and tones ranging from creamy ivory to dark brown. Every handle is distinctive in colour and figure.

Once polished, ram horn develops a soft gloss that highlights its natural curves and translucent areas. Small surface marks or variations are not flaws but unique signatures — each piece preserving the story of the animal it came from.

In knife making, ram horn is respected for its strength, resilience, and warm tactility. Combined with Damascus steel, it creates a blend of enduring tradition, authenticity, and refined character.

This video offers the opportunity to appreciate every aspect of this handcrafted Laguiole knife — from the unique grain of its handle to the intricate, forged Damascus patterns. Crafted entirely in France by Laguiole en Aubrac, it stands as a testament to superb workmanship and timeless design.

Damascus Blades: A Heritage of Craftsmanship and Modern Excellence

A Damascus blade is far more than a simple cutting tool — it embodies an ancient craft perfected over more than two millennia. First developed in ancient India and later refined throughout the Middle East, this technique involves layering steels with different properties, forge-welding them under intense heat, and repeatedly folding and hammering the metal. The outcome is a blade that combines strength, flexibility and remarkable sharpness. Its distinctive wave-like patterns, reminiscent of natural mineral formations, are forged into the steel itself, ensuring that each blade is entirely unique.

Historically, Damascus steel was susceptible to rust and needed frequent maintenance. Thanks to advances in metallurgy — particularly by forges such as Balbach in Germany — it is now possible to create stainless Damascus blades. These retain their captivating forged patterns while providing excellent resistance to everyday corrosion. Modern Damascus truly offers the best of both worlds: the noble tradition of hand-forging and the innovation of contemporary steel craftsmanship.
