Laguiole Steak Knives, Set of 2
Laguiole steak knives, set of 2: two matching knives, made by hand in France by Laguiole en Aubrac for a table laid for two. The two knives come in one handle material, such as a wood, a horn or a recycled shell. A pair suits a couple at home, or anyone who would rather own two good knives than six they hardly use.
A set of 2 steak knives is also a sensible first step. Every handle here also comes in a set of six, and most in sets of four, so you can add more later in the same material. For more place settings, see the Laguiole Steak Knives, Set of 4 or the Laguiole Steak Knives, Set of 6. If you’d like forks with them, the Laguiole Steak Knife and Fork Set, 2 Place Settings comes in every handle here except the shells.

Thuya, grapevine or mussel shell handles
Thuya is a blond wood dotted with knots and small eyes in the grain, satin-finished and warm in tone, and its shade varies slightly from one knife to its partner. Grapevine handles are cut from the core of old vines at the end of their productive life, then stabilised with resin. The wood is brown, with a dense, knotty grain and a satin finish, and no two handles match exactly. Recycled mussel shell is pearly blue-grey, with violet glints that come and go as the light shifts, and it suits pale china and darker plates alike.

When 2 steak knives are enough
For a couple, 2 steak knives cover every meal with meat on the plate, from a midweek steak to the Sunday roast. Buy six and four of them would sit in a drawer most of the week. A pair is also a way to live with a handle for a while before committing, and the Guide to 6-Piece Laguiole Steak Knife Sets compares sets of two, four and six if you're still deciding. For a single place with a fork included, there's the Laguiole Steak Knife and Fork Set, 1 Place Setting.
Matching a pair to a larger set
Already own a set of four? Every handle on this page except the two shells also comes in a set of four, so adding a pair in the same material makes six place settings. Both shell handles are sold as pairs or as sets of six. Whichever size you choose, the knives are crafted by hand in France by Laguiole en Aubrac, whose name is on every blade, so a pair added later comes from the same maker as your set.
Your steak knife questions
How should you lay a table with steak knives?
Put the steak knife on the plate's right, blade turned inwards, and the fork goes on the left. If there's a starter, its cutlery goes on the outside, because you work inwards course by course. With two knives in the set, both places get the same Laguiole en Aubrac knife, so the two settings look alike from one side of the table to the other.
How should you eat a steak with your knife and fork?
Keep the fork in the left hand, tines down, to steady the meat, and cut a mouthful at a time with the knife held in the right. The British way is to hold both throughout the meal, resting them on the plate only to pause or take a drink. As you hold the knife from first cut to last, the handle matters: mussel shell, for instance, is smooth and cool to the touch.
How do you choose steak knives?
First, check the maker. Anyone may use the Laguiole name, so it turns up on mass-produced knives too, whereas the blades of these are marked with their maker, Laguiole en Aubrac. Then count your place settings: two for a couple, four or six for a bigger table. Finally, choose the handle: blond thuya, brown grapevine or blue-grey mussel shell.
Every parcel includes care instructions. Wash the pair by hand, wipe them dry at once, and spare wooden and horn handles the dishwasher.
