Laguiole Dessert Spoons, Set of 6
These Laguiole dessert spoons come from Laguiole en Aubrac, which makes them by hand in France, six to a set. You can choose a wooden or a horn handle. You eat pudding with the dessert spoon: crumble, trifle, a slice of tart or a bowl of ice cream. Its handle also appears on the soup spoons, the table forks and the steak knives of the same range, so pudding needn’t look different from the main course.
Go for one wood or horn throughout, or the mixed set: six spoons in six different animal materials, from dark horn to creamy white. Choose a dessert spoon set whose handle matches your table forks and the whole meal will match. For pudding eaten with a fork, add the Laguiole Dessert Knives & Cake Forks, Set of 6. For the soup course, see the Laguiole Soup Spoons, Set of 6.

Zebu horn tip, olive or wenge
Olive is a dense wood chosen for its grain, a wavy figure over a light background, and it's given a satin finish. Wenge, from equatorial Africa, is a deep brown verging on black, marked with fine streaks that look striking against white china. With zebu horn tip, the handle is cut from the horn's densest section, right at the point, and its polished shades run from honey to caramel, sometimes flamed. Pick olive for a light, warm table, wenge for strong contrast or horn tip for honey tones. Our UK guide to dessert spoons, dessert knives and forks covers the choice in more depth.

Where the pudding spoon fits
In a formal British setting, the dessert spoon is placed above the plate alongside the dessert fork, its handle to the right, ready for whatever pudding arrives. Laguiole en Aubrac makes it shorter than its soup spoon, in a format designed for sweet things such as tart or ice cream, and it's just as good with sticky toffee pudding or a fruit fool. It's also the spoon for a crème caramel or a chocolate mousse. Nothing stops a factory from stamping Laguiole on its cutlery, and a great many do. Each of these spoons is handmade in France by Laguiole en Aubrac.
Matching pudding cutlery
With the exception of the mixed set, each wood and horn here is also used for cake forks and dessert knives, so the whole pudding course can share one material. The soup spoons and table forks share these handles, as do the steak knives. Buy the pieces you need first and add the others later. Take wenge, for instance: you can have the same dark wood at every course, from soup and steak through to crème caramel.
Dessert spoon questions
How big is a dessert spoon?
At the table, it's the middle-sized spoon, bigger than a teaspoon, which makes it the natural size for pudding. In the kitchen, a dessert spoon is a 10ml measure. These Laguiole en Aubrac spoons come in a shorter format than the maker's soup spoons, six to a set, with handles in either wood or horn.
How many teaspoons in a dessert spoon?
Two. In British recipes, a teaspoon is 5ml and a dessert spoon 10ml, so two level teaspoons make one. The spoons you eat with aren't standardised in the same way, so keep measuring spoons for baking and use these Laguiole dessert spoons for crumble and custard.
Is a tablespoon the same as a dessert spoon?
No. In recipes, a tablespoon is 15ml, compared with 10ml for a dessert spoon. In a British cutlery set, the tablespoon is usually a large serving spoon, while the smaller one is set at every place for pudding. These are dessert spoons, made by hand in France for the table.
Care advice comes with every order. Hand wash the spoons, dry each one straight after, and keep any wooden or horn handle away from the dishwasher.
