Laguiole Soup Spoons, Set of 6
Choose from sets of six Laguiole soup spoons, made by hand in France by Laguiole en Aubrac, with handles in wood, horn or stone. The large spoon of a French place setting is the soup spoon, made for soup, broth and cream soups, and handy for anything else you’d eat from a bowl. Laguiole en Aubrac uses the same handles for its table forks and steak knives, so you can build a matching place setting set by set.
Go for a single material if you want a matching soup spoon set, or the mixed set, where every spoon has a different animal material and guests won’t mix theirs up. Juniper is satin-finished, while ebony, horn and stone are polished. Complete each place setting with the Laguiole Table Forks, Set of 6 and the Laguiole Steak Knives, Set of 6. For pudding, add the Laguiole Dessert Spoons, Set of 6.

Juniper, ebony or thuya
Juniper grows in the mountains of the Mediterranean, and its wood is pale and finely grained, with a light peppery scent that comes out as you hold it. Ebony handles use nothing but the black heartwood, polished to a deep shine. Thuya comes from burls gathered when large gardens across Europe are pruned, and shows a warm blond colour with a fine, figured grain. Juniper and thuya suit a light, informal table, while ebony gives six dark handles that stand out against white china. Dining spoons to match your forks and knives
These dining spoons share their handles with Laguiole en Aubrac's forks and steak knives, so you can lay a full place in one wood or horn. Buy the spoons first and the forks later, or the other way round: each handle material is available for both. A full British cutlery set usually includes soup spoons as well as dessert spoons, and all the wood and horn designs come in both. Stone handles come in forks and knives too, though not in dessert spoons. When matching pieces, go by the maker: nothing protects the Laguiole name, and plenty of factory cutlery uses it.
One material or a mixed set
The mixed set brings together six different animal materials, from black horn to cream, so the six places never look quite the same. For a classic table, stick with one material. Stone handles, in deep blue or green, add a touch of colour. Since the handles are natural, grain and colour vary a little from spoon to spoon, and a set you add later may differ slightly from the first. Laguiole en Aubrac makes these spoons by hand in France.
Soup spoon questions
What is the correct spoon for soup?
A soup spoon, laid on the far right of a British place setting, outside the knives, since soup usually comes first. British etiquette is to move the spoon away from you across the bowl, sip from its side rather than the tip, and tilt the bowl away from you to reach the last of the soup. Laguiole en Aubrac makes these soup spoons for exactly that, in wood, horn or stone.
What are soup spoons called?
In Britain, the name stays that simple on any cutlery list. Be careful with the word tablespoon: in a cutlery set it usually means a large serving spoon, and in recipes it's a 15ml measure, so it isn't the same thing. The French call it a cuillère à soupe, and that's the piece Laguiole en Aubrac makes here, in sets of six.
Why do people still use soup spoons?
Because a soup spoon is still a standard piece in a full British cutlery set, alongside table knives and forks, dessert spoons and forks, and teaspoons. It's also handy for stews, cereal and anything else served in a bowl. Laguiole en Aubrac makes them in sets of six, with handles to match its table forks.
You'll receive care instructions with each order. Hand wash the spoons, dry them at once, and never let a wooden or horn handle into the dishwasher.
