Laguiole Cutlery
Made by hand in France by Laguiole en Aubrac, this Laguiole cutlery comes as separate sets of knives, forks or spoons, so a table can be built up gradually. Steak knives, table forks, soup spoons, dessert spoons, dessert knives and cake forks each have sets of their own. Many handle materials are shared by the steak knives, forks and spoons, so pieces bought months apart still match.
For the main course, choose the Laguiole Steak Knives, Set of 6, the Laguiole Steak Knives, Set of 4 or the Laguiole Steak Knives, Set of 2, then add Laguiole forks with the Laguiole Table Forks, Set of 6. Spoons come as the Laguiole Soup Spoons, Set of 6 and the Laguiole Dessert Spoons, Set of 6. For pudding, the dessert knives and cake forks are two separate sets of six, both found under the Laguiole Dessert Knives & Cake Forks, Set of 6.
Laying the table for one or two? A knife and fork in matching handles come together in the Laguiole Steak Knife and Fork Set, 2 Place Settings and the Laguiole Steak Knife and Fork Set, 1 Place Setting, while the 5-Piece Laguiole Individual Cutlery Set gives one person a knife, a fork, a soup spoon and the two dessert pieces. To see how these pieces of French cutlery fit together, read the guide Dining Cutlery Sets: Beyond the Full Service. For six people in a single purchase, choose the Laguiole Cutlery Sets.

Wood handle cutlery in pistachio and wenge, or zebu horn tip
Start with the handle: on this wood handle cutlery, the material you pick for the knives can be matched on the forks and spoons. Pistachio has a satin finish, golden yellow shading into pale green. Wenge, satin as well, is a dark brown that looks almost black, with straight veins. Polished zebu horn tip shows streaks of amber and pale blond in a browner horn, translucent in places on some handles. Each of the three is made for steak knives, table forks, soup and dessert spoons, plus the knife and fork sets for one and two.

Cutlery in sixes, fours or twos
Rather than one complete service for six, this range lets you buy each kind of piece separately. Steak knives are sold in sixes, fours or twos. Table forks, soup spoons, dessert spoons, dessert knives and cake forks are sold in sixes. That suits a household that eats more steak than soup, or anyone adding pudding cutlery to the knives and forks they already own. It also means the table can grow from two places to six in the same handle throughout.
Where to start with Laguiole knives and forks
The obvious place to start is Laguiole knives and forks, the pieces used at nearly every meal. For two, start with the two-place knife and fork set, and the steak knives in fours or sixes suit a bigger table. Soup spoons, the longer spoon of the two, come next, then dessert spoons for crumble or custard. The dessert knives and cake forks, smaller than the table pieces, are the ones for tarts, sponges and fruit. For the pudding pieces in more detail, read the UK guide to dessert spoons, dessert knives and forks.
Laguiole cutlery questions
How does Laguiole differ from Laguiole en Aubrac?
Laguiole is the name of a knife style, and since the name is not protected, lots of factory-made knives and forks carry it. Laguiole en Aubrac makes its cutlery by hand in France, and each of its knife blades carries the maker's name. Every piece on this page, whether steak knife or cake fork, comes from Laguiole en Aubrac.
What are the different types of cutlery forks?
At home, the two you use most are the table fork, for the main course, and the smaller dessert or cake fork, for pudding. Both are here: table forks in sets of six, and cake forks sold by six beside the dessert knives. Carving and cheese forks are serving pieces, used at the board or the joint rather than at each place setting.
What makes Laguiole cutlery special?
For this cutlery, it starts with being made by hand in France, with natural handles: pistachio, zebu horn tip or wenge, each one grained or flamed in its own way. Then there is the way it is sold. Since one handle material runs through steak knives, forks and spoons, you can lay a matching table over months, buying only what you need.
A leaflet on looking after the handles is packed with every order. Hand wash, dry with a tea towel at once, and never load wood or horn into the dishwasher, since heat and soaking would dull them.
